Zero Waste and Recycling Education Campaign

    What is it?

Raven Recycling recently applied for and received a Community Development Fund grant to develop a year-long education campaign/program focusing on Zero Waste and recycling.  Raven applied for the funding because we have been working hard to support the City of Whitehorse’s stated goal of reaching 50% diversion by 2015.    We know that without education, we won’t get far.  We also know that with a variety of partnerships and collaboration, an education campaign could help improve diversion rates in every community.  Our campaign will focus on students, general consumer and the Industrial, Commercial and Institutional sectors.

    Why is Raven doing this?

Over the past few years we have sat with the City of Whitehorse, P&M Recycling and Yukon Government on a Recycling Working Group to examine how to have an efficient recycling system territory wide.  We were also a member of the Solid Waste Advisory Committee where education was recognized to be a key component if a renewed waste management system was to be successful.

Zero Waste is a lofty goal and it is recognized that although we will never get to zero we do believe we can divert much more than the current rate of 22% (mainly household recycling and compost).

    Process

We are looking for partners to help deliver and use the campaign which would start in the fall of 2013.  So far we have met with P&M Recycling, the City of Whitehorse, YG Department of Education, YG Department of Environment, YG Department of Community Services, the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce, Yukon Conservation Society, the Compost Recycling and other Project Committee at Yukon College, Yukon Teacher’s Association and Kwanlin Dun.  We hope to meet with CYFN in the near future and are looking forward to receiving input and feedback from AYC members and Local Advisory councils.  Everyone we have spoken to likes the idea and sees its value to the community.  We currently are collecting input on components of a campaign via a survey as well.

    Next steps:

All input from surveys and stakeholder meetings will be received by May 17th.  We will then develop a framework and send it back to any organization, business, government or institution who expressed support to make sure we get it right with an eye to a kick off in September!  At that point, we will also be fleshing out costs and potential resources to implement the campaign.

YTA Members are encouraged to complete the survey (link below) and to help in developing the campaign:

Any and all comments are welcome.  We are very excited about this project and look forward to working with you.
